Neon

A short poem

There is light

beyond the monstrous buildings

of the city we will never visit

I try to imagine life

beyond the shallow rooftops

of our destitute town

Brimming with orange and gold

as another summer day

comes to an end

I try to imagine the absurdity,

the chaos and the madness

of a city that never sleeps

A city filled with people

who crave adventure and peril

A city charming enough

to transfix tourist and residents alike

Where laughter, declarations and cold shrieks

are hushed by the eternal, wailing presence

of the city

One must be partly mad

to want to descend

into a world like that

Perhaps, one simply craves

for the perfect imbalance

between lightness and darkness

A neon sign, buzzing quietly

underneath the wide, vacant sky
